New spokes needed?
« on: February 12, 2010, 11:19:49 AM »

I just struck a beautiful relationship with a spoke importer that can gives me an IN with Sapim spokes, so now custom 11, 12, 13, and 14ga spokes are totally possible.

It seems that mopeds are about standard enough that a few spoke sizes would cover the majority of builds.  Anybody care to measure some spokes and tell me what wheel size/ hub type it is?   Even better would be spoke diameter in MM.

I know that PUCH front and rear hubs laced into 17" rims needs 190mm 12ga spokes .   I would assume that most other mopeds with 17" rims are within a few mm unless the hubs are wacky.

So you want some high quality replacement spokes available?

No more than $1 per spoke for the thickest stuff, with nipple.  Probably a bit less in reality, closer to .75 each for nice small gauge stainless spoke.

I can go measure a Puch wheel and a Honda wheel.

Tell me what I am measuring?

Spoke diameter
Spoke length (how do I measure this? from the hole to the nipple?)
Hub width
Hub Diameter

spoke length is from the hub hole to the end of the spoke, generally inside the nipple about where the rim starts, sometimes a few more mm inside.

For the rim size, I just need to know 17" or 16" (or whatever).

Can I just tell you to the rim so I don't have to take the wheel apart?

No need to take it apart at all.  Just measure from hub hole to where the nipple goes into the rim.

Sure you can use my stand and tools to lace one up.

I just ordered 400 spokes to get me started.  194mm, 165mm, 148mm in 11ga. (2.9mm diameter).  The hub holes may need a .15mm reaming for 11ga to slide through, but it depends on the hub and what the stock spokes were.

Does your puch have 17 or 16" rims?

Keep posting up sizes you need, I can order at any time.  If it is custom, there is 6-8 lead time for manufacturing.

So now can you get rims too?

A 36 hole 18 or 19 inch rim?

I can't get rims yet.  I am looking for a Taiwanese company willing to ship steel or aluminum rims still.  I can get some in the US, but they are $80 even for "cheap" tai rims.  Redonkulous if you ask me.

Awesome data, thanks.  Looks like I will have some 2.9mm spokes (11ga) that will be a good fit for most mopeds immediately, but the more common 2.6 12ga and 2.3mm 13ga will require custom runs that take 6 to 8 weeks.   160, 172, and 192mm look common enough.  I will see how my 194mm 11ga fit in my puch wheels.

I agree 80 bucks is too much. Maybe 80 for two.

I was surprised to see that the fronts and rears are different gauges.  They could be opened up a bit though for the heavier stuff I am thinking right?

How does the threading for the nipples work?  Is that all the same size usually?

I am also seeing that many of these bikes have thicker spokes on the rear.  The spokes are matched to the nipples, and few nipples are cross compatible.  Every size has a specific nipple, and many brands have their own threading pitch.

12ga will work across the board from what I can tell, but some rear ends may use 11 or 10ga.  11ga will probably slip fit into most of these wheels too, maybe a bit of drilling the hub and rim.  The threads are actually bigger than the spoke, so that is the critical point to pass through.

Once I get the first batch in I will be able to tell you how the 11ga fits into a puch wheel that is meant for 12ga, best that I can tell and measure.

You got some 10 or 11 gauge 165s for sale ? I need 36 spokes for a 16 inch honda wheel 2 inchs wide . Had 2.3 mm thick spokes , but that was when it was a front wheel So I'm thinking heavier for the rear wheel .

$40 will ship em out priority with nipples.  You could save maybe $2 with parcel post, but I would need to weigh it.

I can do paypal, but cash is always nice.  I get so many paypals that it is very hard to keep track of stuff that doesn't go through my website.
