Say prayers for Mark Hinrichs
« on: August 26, 2008, 07:57:36 PM »

Hey all,

I received a disturbing phone call today. Apparently, Mark was riding his moped near Dutchtown last night around 1 am, when he was confronted by someone who demanded his bike. When he refused, the assailant shot him in the stomach. He was taken to SLU hospital, where he is in critical, but stable condition. He already had one surgery today, and may need more. The police towed his moped from the scene, and a neighbor is looking after the fort. It seems no one may speak to him, or even get information on his status, until the detectives are done questioning.

There is a link to the story on KMOV.com

Let's all keep Mark in our thoughts and prayers...

I tried to go see him at SLU, but it is family members only.  I lied and said he was my uncle, but still no dice.  A bunch of us moped guys have been talking all day, and we all want to be in the loop.  So even if we don't post it on here, please let us all know what's going on if anyone finds out.  I'm not the praying type, but he's been in my thoughts constantly since I heard the bad news.  My cell is 518-588-3044 if anyone wants to let me know whats going on.  Or if anyone wants to know, feel free to call me and I'll tell you what I know.  It's all pretty vague right now.

Rick thought, and I really agree, that we need a phone chain. The only numbers I have are Mark, Rick, Mike, Ryne, and Alex.

I don't know if that type of info is what we want posted on our public forum, but it's something we should all really, really consider.

If anyone knows anything, needs to talk, wants to try and see Mark, or anything at all you can reach me at: 636-577-4500

Thats fucked up. Keep everyone updated please. I know he is going to be fine. Only a hardass like him would say "NO" to someone stealing his moped. He needs an award or something.

I dont know what Mark would be more pissed about, the shooting or if the news said he was riding a SCOOTER.

Hey everybody,

I set up a fundraiser for Mark online through DropCash.  It's set up to go to my Paypal account.  Go here to donate and keep an eye on the totals:

http://www.dropcash.com/campaign/anniewebb/mark_hinrichs_fund/

I'm not sure if he has health insurance, but even if he does this is going to be expensive.

Okay Danielle here.  I don't know if I am doing this right but thought I ought to give an update on how Mark's doing.  He had another surgery today--all went as well as they expected.  The bullet went in one side and came out the other--tearing up his bowels but missing his kidneys, liver, etc...  His vitals are all strong but they have him heavily sedated and on a breathing tube.  They say they will remove all this tomorrow.  We should have a much better sense on how things are when he is awake.  The police report said witnesses said 13 shots were fired so we're pretty lucky only one went through him.  The cops have a description of the shooter and I got a notice today that the Puch is at the impound lot--hopefully they will let me pick it up without any proof of ownership.  Many thanks to Tom, Mike and Annie for cleaning up the compound and organizing the moped stuff that was strewn about.  I'll be at the hospital all day tomorrow waiting for him to wake up--y'all are welcome to call on my cell--the number is posted on the chalkboard in the kitchen.  My landline is out of order but you can call Mark's number to reach me for an update.  Feel free to call--I won't answer if I'm feeling overwhelmed with explanations.  I'll post again tomorrow with whatever new news I know.  Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good vibes.  And remember, Mark is quite an alley cat--he's tough enough to weather this.
Thx, Danielle

Danielle,
I just realized that it is his green Puch Maxi that is missing from the garage.  Luckily we have that serial number.  It is 1 digit off from my green puch.  So if you need the serial number we can get it.  One of ours was xxxxx8x and the other is xxxxx9x.  If you need to get it out of impound you can look at mine that is in the garage and it is the other one.  It is a green Puch Maxi MKII.  I will call you tomorrow to let you know this.  I hope all is well.  And of course call me if you need anything.  I'll stop by tomorrow.

I will keep thinking positive thoughts for Mike and pray that his surgeons are guided from above.

What a tragedy. Someone cannot even ride the vehicle of their choice.

I hope the thief is found and charged with attempted murder and vehicular theft.

I'll introduce myself in another message. I first heard about this by reading the comments section on ksdk.com. This just frakking sucks!

There's no hug smiley or else I'd post it here for Mark, his friends and his family.

So, here's a hug for you guys (((mark)))

Update
« Reply #10 on: August 28, 2008, 11:00:01 PM »

Danielle couldn't get on to post tonight, so she asked me to update yous.

There is no change in Mark's condition today.  He is still holding stable.  They decided to wait an extra day to take him out of sedation and remove his breathing tube.  But his vitals are good, so we will see how he is tomorrow.

Barb Potts, the local neighborhood stabilization officer, related the story of Mark taking a picture of him in bed with his moped and sending it to Danielle saying he found a new woman to a StL police Sergeant.  The sergeant said that he would personally write a letter to get his moped out of impound without fees for a man who loves his moped so much that he'd leave his wife.  :)

Oh, and Danielle said she would prefer that we keep doing fix it days at the fort.  So we're not moving the whole operation over to Tom's like we'd planned.  New rule is that we have to be out of there by 8pm though.  So if we want to stay together after that, we'll have to find a hangout (diner/bar/apartment/whatever).  But the 8pm deadline is good since it will actually force us to clean up and get out of there at a reasonable time.

The Sioux Falls trip and our rally might not be canceled afterall.  We chatted tonight and decided to wait and see how Mark is recovering before we go making any decisions.

We'll know more about how Mark's doing once he is awake tomorrow.  Keep an eye out for updates!

Jason checking in.  Prayers for sure.  I'll try to make it down there on Sunday for sure.

Cell is 210-2660 if you guys need my help.  As I posted on MA I have a pickup and would do whatever I could to pitch in while he's recovering, go shopping, move stuff, clean up stuff, weed whack, feed pets, I mean it wouldn't matter.  I have tools and I have time and want to help if I can.  Just call or email me.  Would help me get out of my little tribulations to pitch in for however needed.

Hey, I think once Mark becomes well enough to bitch again, he will say "you guys should at least go to SD without me"

I can also be he will work hard to be in tip top shape for your rally in Novemeber. I highly doubt that he wants you to cancel it. We shall see though

Ohh and if SD is still on, please call me and keep me up to date. I am going to be in California until Friday when we are supposed to leave. I will fly back early in the morning on Friday and wait for you guys to show up in KC at my place. I had also asked Mark if he would stop by my parents place in STL to pick up my sleeping bag and stuff. But maybe you guys could do that as a favor to me while Mark is laid up.

I think I still have your number Mike, maybe send me an email to confirm, kjm43b(at)hotmail.com, fix the at part.

Here is what Danielle just posted on MA and asked that someone put here:
"I can’t post onto the IRE site (apparently I am already a member but I have no idea what my password is)—can someone forward or cut and paste or something to put this update over there, too?
Mark is awake and cognizant, though stoned out of his head on painkillers. He is uncomfortable but doesn’t seem to be in pain. When I left tonight I saw him wink at the nurse so he’s definitely getting back into form. I’ll let you know when they transfer him out of ICU. When he gets onto a regular floor, I’d sure like to have shifts with him so that he isn’t left alone right at first—the nurses on the regular floors are so often overloaded that they don’t get to keep an eye on their patients so well. thanks again for all the help and support!
Danielle"

I just got the email about Mark.  I cannot believe I'm just hearing about it on Saturday, but I'll try to catch up.  First of all, I want to help if there's anything I can do.  Of course I'll include Mark in my prayers, but want to help any other way I can.  If Danielle askes for something I can do, please let me know.

I'm working long hours rebuilding the deck on the back of my house which partially explains why I have not looked at moped websites.  I should be shutting down work tomorrow (Sunday) about 2 or 3 pm and will head to the compound to see if there's anything you saved for me to do.

Sign me up for visiting with Mark when he gets to a room.  I'll be glad to help see to it the nurses pay attention to him.

Dave, I'm sorry.  I should've called you to tell you.  All week it's been work, see what I can do for Danielle, and answer 2000 questions via phone, e-mail, and forums.  The good part of that is that Mark is definitely loved.  The bad part is, I didn't get to give everyone the details that should've gotten them.

Our assignment for tomorrow is to fix up Jabu and Augie's bicycles.  So if that isn't done by the time you get there, you're welcome to help.  I'm sure there will be more to do, but that is all I know of right now.  I'm not sure if Danielle will be there or not, as she's trying to spend as much time as she can with Mark.  She said she's been staying until about 7pm, then coming home.  So if we're all still around after that we should see her.

See you tomorrow!

Best Laid Plans, and all that.......  I won't be able to come to the moped meeting today to help.  I didn't notice my wife has the calendar full after deck construction today.  She already made plans for me to be at someone else's house.  Again, if something comes up that you think I can do (not today) please call me.   In the meantime, please know I am thinking of Mark, his family and all of you.   Dave

Mark is doing well.  Unfortunately I didn't get to go see him yesterday, but the day before that was good.  He was off of all his pain medication (He's crazy, I'd be begging for it).  He was starting to eat real food.  He had taken a walk around his floor of the hospital.  He's recovering very well, but he's still got a long road.

The best news is that we can visit him now.  If you want his contact info, be it hospital visiting info, or his phone number, contact me: mijunkin@gmail.com

I visited with Mark yesterday afternoon (September 4).  He was still feeling okay without pain medication.  He did sneeze once and that caused him some pain, but only for the time of the sneeze.  We laughed a lot.  He said he was hoping to go home today or Saturday. He will have a "bag" that collects the contents of his intestines.  His intestines were injured by the bullet.  He said the nurses were teaching him how to tend the bag until his intestines heal.  He was in great spirits and I am sure he welcomes any visitors.  Check with Mike or me as to how to gain access to his room.  The hospital protects their patients by making you know how to get in.  You cannot just ask for Mark by name.  Go see him.  Like me, you will be glad you did.   Dave

I'm so happy to hear Mark is healing well. I hope he continues on the road to recovery. I think it helps him knowing so many out here are sending good vibes.
